Hamlet is a small community with a population of approximately 400, surrounded by industrial forest land. Our response area is made up of 98% agriculture/wildland, 1% is protected infrastructure and 1% residential area.

Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District protects from MP 4 to MP 14 and approximately 180 square miles. We cover highway 53 and 10 miles U.S Highway 26. Our response area also contains Saddle Mountain State Park, which has a campground and the highest peak in Clatsop County with an elevation of 3,287 feet.

Organization Function

The Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District is governed by a 5-member elected Board of Directors that are elected at large. The Board of Directors elect the Chief to serve as the District’s Chief Executive Officer.

The Chief is responsible for hiring, firing, and supervising or delegating the supervision of all volunteer staff. Under current organization structure, the Fire Chief delegates authority through a volunteer Assistant Chief. 

Budget

The department has an annual budget of $35,000, with 90% of the budget coming from taxes, 8% donations, and 2% service fees.

We provide:

Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, Emergency Medical Responder, Haz-mat Operational Level, Rescue Operational Level, Structural Fire Suppression and Wildland Fire Suppression. Although these are the primary services we provide, we also respond to mutual aid calls to Seaside Fire and Rescue, and Elsie Vinemaple RFPD. We have a high call volume of motor vehicle accidents on the highway, and perform rescues on hiking trails and lost citizens on logger roads, utilizing drones and GPS coordinate training.

Training sessions are every Wednesday evening from 7:30pm - 9:30pm at the main station at 37240 Highway 26.

Hamlet is accredited through the State of Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). It is the goal to have all new firefighters trained to firefighter 1 within 12 months, firefighter 2 in 24 months, and driver/operator in 36 months. All firefighters are encouraged to attain EMS training.
